Tan Sri Dato' Dr Yahya Bin Awang MBBS 1974
Cardiothoracic Surgeon

One of the Colombo Plan Scholars, Yahya Bin Awang graduated from Monash University with a MBBS in 1974. In 1980 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow (FRCS).

Moving to London in 1981, he worked as Surgical Registrar in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brampton Hospital before returning to Malaysia to take up the role of Cardiothoracic Surgeon at General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. In 1985, he was appointed Head and Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at General Hospital.

From 1992 until 2002, Tan Sri Dato' Dr Awang held the position of Head and Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Malaysia's National Heart Institute. And from 1998 until 2002, he was also Medical Director of that Institute.

His many professional achievements include performing open heart surgery on Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohammad in 1989; pioneering the establishment of The National Heart Institute of Malaysia in 1992; and performing the first heart transplant in Malaysia in 1998.

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Awang is author of many scholarly and professional articles and has made numerous presentations to professional audiences.

Today, he is Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Damansara Heart Centre, Damansara Specialist Hospital in Selangor, Malaysia. He is also chairman of the National Transplant Registry and a council member of the Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia.
